The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) has authorised the development of 62 transmission system upgrades across the US state, which will create 3.5 GW of additional capacity for renewable energy, or enough to supply more than 2.8 million New York households. The upgrades are designed to alleviate bottlenecks in the grid and allow a higher penetration of renewable energy in the state.
The NYPSC approved requests from Central Hudson Gas & Electric, New York State Electric & Gas, National Grid and Rochester Gas and Electric to develop the local transmission upgrades, which will cost an estimated US$4.4bn in total. They include upgrades to existing transmission lines, upgrades to existing substations and the construction of three new substations. The utilities plan to complete the projects between 2024 and 2030.
New York State aims to source 70% of its power from renewables by 2030 and reach a zero-emission power sector by 2040.
