New York State approves the 320 kV Sunrise wind power transmission line (US)

The New York State Public Service Commission has approved the 40 km, 320 kV Sunrise power transmission line, which will deliver electricity from the 924 MW Sunrise offshore wind project, located off the coast of Long Island, to the existing electrical grid in Brookhaven, Suffolk County (US state of New York).

The approved transmission project includes a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) submarine export cable that will enter New York State territorial waters three nautical miles (5.5 km) from land. The transmission line will then transition from an offshore cable to an onshore cable that will travel to an onshore converter station.

The US$408m Sunrise offshore wind project will have the ability to power 600,000 American households and is expected to become fully operational by 2025.

The state of New York targets 9 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035. Currently, plans for five offshore wind farms totalling 4.3 GW are already in development. New York also aims to source 70% of its power from renewables by 2030 and reach a zero-emission power sector by 2040. At the federal level, the United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (only 42 MW in 2021).
