The New York Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved an initiative aimed at fighting climate change and accelerating progress towards the state's energy efficiency targets as part of the state's Clean Energy Jobs and Climate Agenda. The new energy efficiency goal for investor-owned utilities is expected to double utility energy efficiency progress by 2025 and to reduce the state's energy consumption by the equivalent of powering and fueling 1.8 million homes annually (185 TBtu of cumulative annual site energy consumption by 2025, equivalent to 4.6 Mtoe).
It has also set an energy storage objective of 3,000 MW by 2030 with an interim goal of 1,500 MW by 2025, thus becoming the fourth US state to adopt an energy storage target after California, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
The state of New York is moving forward quickly with the development of renewable energies and launched an 800 MW offshore wind solicitation in November 2018, the first step towards reaching the target of 2,400 MW of new offshore wind generation by 2030 and covering 50% of its power generation requirements by then.
