New South Wales (Australia) plans a new 8 GW renewables zone

The government of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) plans to invest AUD79m (US$55m) to create a new 8 GW Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in New England, which is expected to attract AUD12.7bn (US$8.8bn) in investment.

In March 2020, the government of NSW identified three Renewable Energy Zones in Central-West, New England and SouthWest NSW that could accommodate up to 17,700 MW of wind, solar and power storage capacity. The first 3 GW REZ would be set up around Dubbo, in the state’s central-west region. Another 4,950 MW could be added in the south-west REZ (around Hay) and up to 5,500 MW could be added around Armidale in the New England REZ. The government also committed to fast-track the development of the first Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). In June 2020, the government of NSW received 113 expressions of interest for projects to be included in its new 3 GW Central-West Orana REZ. The proposed projects totalled 27 GW of wind, solar and storage capacity and AUD38bn (US$26bn) in investments, highlighting a strong interest in such REZs.
