The new Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation came into force (UK)

The United Kingdom's new Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) has come into force, compelling transport fuel companies which supply at least 450,000 l/year to incorporate at least 9.75% of biofuel in 2020 (from the current 4.75%) and 12.4% by 2032. The share of advanced waste-based renewable fuels will be set at 0.1% in 2019 and progressively raised to 2.8% in 2032. Crop biofuels will be capped at 4% of fuel in 2018, and will be reduced each year from 2021, to reach 3% in 2026 and 2% in 2032. In addition, renewable aviation fuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin will be brought into the scheme.

This new regulation paves the way for the doubling of renewable fuel uses in the UK transport sector within the next 15 years, cutting the sector's reliance on imported fuel. The RTFO is also coupled with the government's target to reduce the transport's greenhouse gas emissions by 6% by 2020.
