New Jersey (US) doubles offshore wind target to 7.5 GW by 2035

The governor of New Jersey (United States) has signed an executive order doubling the state's offshore wind capacity target from 3,500 MW by 2030 (January 2018 target) to 7,500 MW by 2035. This new capacity is expected to generate enough power to supply more than 3.2 million households and to help New Jersey meet its target of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and a 100% clean energy economy by 2050.

Earlier in 2019, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) selected Ocean Wind, a project company led by Ørsted with the support of Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), as the preferred bidder for the first offshore wind project in the state, a 1,100 MW project due by 2024. Ocean Wind will negotiate a 20-year offshore wind renewable energy credit (OREC) for the project. The NJBPU has also developed a proposed timeline to consider two future solicitations for 1,200 MW of offshore wind to be held in 2020 and 2022.
