The state of New Jersey (United States) has released its draft Offshore Wind Strategic Plan, confirming its plans to develop 7.5 GW of offshore wind power by 2035. The plan determines infrastructure projects (including transmission networks), and protection measures for the fishing industry among other things.
The plan is expected to contribute to the New Jersey state's goal to achieve 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050, including 23% from offshore wind power. A 1,100 MW offshore wind project was already awarded to Ocean Wind (the joint venture of Ørsted and PSEG) in June 2019 (commissioning expected in 2024). In March 2020, the state presented the schedule for the next offshore wind auctions, which will offer 6,400 MW of offshore wind capacity to be developed in the state's waters.
In addition to New Jersey, the neighbouring states of Maryland and New York have committed 1,200 MW and 9,000 MW of offshore wind power, accounting for approximately 50% of the East Coast market.
