New gas pipeline commissioned between China and Myanmar

A new gas pipeline has been commissioned from the port of Kyaukpyu on the north-western coast of Myanmar and Guigang in the Chinese province of Guizhou. The gas pipeline has a transport capacity of 12 bcm/year and was developed by the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). Construction started in 2010. The pipeline is part of an ambitious US$2.5bn oil and gas pipeline project between the two countries. A first 12 bcm/year gas line between the Shwe gas fields offshore Myanmar and Kunming in Yunnan (China) was commissioned in July 2013.

The 2,520 km-pipeline, of which 1,727 km are in China, runs through Yunnan, Guizhou and Chongqing, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is expected to reduce coal consumption by nearly 31 Mt/year and to increase tenfold industrial gas consumption (from 5 mcm/d to 500 mcm/d) by the end of 2014 in these provinces. It is also expected to contribute to gas price reductions.
