New 400 MW battery project announced in Massachusetts (US)

Commercial Development Company, a real estate acquisition and redevelopment company, and power transmission and distribution grid developer Anbaric have decided to jointly invest US$650m in the Anbaric Renewable Energy Center in Somerset, Massachusetts (United States): partners will invest US$250 in a 1,200 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter that will serve the emerging offshore wind industry in the State, and an additional US$400m in the development of 400 MW of battery storage on the site. The project will be developed at the Brayton site, a retired 1,600 MW power coal-fired power plant that CDC acquired in 2018.

Massachusetts is betting on offshore wind and plans to reach 3.2 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035. In late April 2019, the State Department of Public Utilities approved long-term off-take contracts for the 800 MW Vineyard Wind offshore wind project, which will be located 15 miles (24 km) to the south of Martha's Vineyard. The US$2bn project is developed by Iberdrola's subsidiary Avangrid Renewables (50%) and the investment fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (50%). The first 400 MW should be operational by the end of 2021 and the remainder by 2022.
