The Netherlands starts work on 10 GW of additional offshore wind capacity

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy has started spatial planning procedures for cable routes that would connect 10.7 GW of installed offshore wind capacity the country plans to add by 2030. The offshore wind projects would be built in IJmuiden Ver Noord, and Wind Energy Zones 1 and 2, and would be connected to Borssele, Geertruidenberg and Maasvlakte. Another cable could link the new 5-East wind energy area to Eemshaven, and a pipeline could also be laid to transport hydrogen produced at sea to Eemshaven.

In November 2021, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management issued an Additional Draft North Sea Programme 2022 – 2027 which raises the Dutch target from the current 11.5 GW to 22.2 GW of operating offshore wind capacity by 2030 by proposing to develop an additional 10.7 GW. The additional offshore wind capacity is expected to help the Netherlands meet the EU goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to the 1990 levels.
