The government of the Netherlands has set a 70 GW offshore wind target for 2050, with midterm targets at 50 GW in 2040 and 21 GW in 2030. The Netherlands also plans to develop large-scale hydrogen production in the North Sea, in order to enable a large part of its industry to switch from gas to green hydrogen.
Earlier in September 2022, the nine countries of the North Sea Energy Cooperation group, which includes the Netherlands, agreed to jointly develop 260 GW of wind power in the North Sea by 2050.
At the end of 2021, the Netherlands has 2.5 GW of installed offshore wind capacity, representing about 6% of the country’s total installed capacity. Offshore wind represented around 4% of the country’s electricity production with 5.3 TWh.
