The government of the Netherlands has selected three new areas (named Nederwiek, Lagelander, and Doordewind) and has confirmed two previously designated areas (northern part of IJmuiden Ver and the southern part of Hollandse Kust (west)) in the North Sea for the development of offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 10.7 GW. The areas are located to the north and northwest of the Dutch territory. With the new areas, the country is doubling the total planned capacity for offshore wind plants to around 21 GW by 2030.
At the end of 2020, the Netherlands had 2,500 MW of offshore wind capacity. The additional offshore wind capacity is expected to help the Netherlands meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to the 1990 levels.
