The Netherlands plans to operate its 515 MW Borssele nuclear plant beyond 2033

The government of the Netherlands has announced that it aims to keep the 515 MW Borssele nuclear power plant open after 2033, when its operating licence expires (Dutch government press release, 17/10/2025).

The Minister of Climate and Green Growth has written to the Dutch House of Representatives a proposition to amend the law to keep the nuclear power plant in operation to “not to be solely dependent on green energy sources, such as offshore wind or solar panels”, while also keeping its CO2-free commitments.

The government is currently developing two new nuclear power plants (1,650 MW each) and plans to set up the Nuclear Energy Organization Netherlands (NEO NL), a state-owned company to regulate and operate them, an initiative expected to represent a €45m investment. Additionally, the country has also allocated €20m to boost the development of SMRs
