The Dutch government has unveiled its new Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap 2030 which outlines plans for 11.5 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, which is 7 GW more than in the current road map (4.5 GW of wind capacities by 2023). The additional 7 GW are expected to be built over the 2024-2030 period. In this respect, new tenders for the attribution of the projects are expected to start from 2021. In particular, three offshore wind park zones have been identified, namely the Holland Coast (Holland Kust West), North of the Wadden Sea Islands (Ten noorden van de Waddeneilanden), and IJmuiden Far (IJmuiden Ver) Offshore.
The aforementioned capacities will be spread as follows: 1.4 GW will be tendered in Holland Coast (West) by 2021 with the commissioning of the projects expected for 2024 and 2025, 700 MW in North of the Wadden Sea Islands by 2022 with the commissioning of the projects expected for 2026 and approximately 4 GW in the IJmuiden Far zone by 2023-2026 with the commissioning of the projects expected for 2027-2030. The remaining 900 MW have not been attributed so far.
By 2030, the Dutch offshore wind power generation is expected to meet 40% of the country's total power demand and the construction of new facilities after 2030 will depend on the switch to electricity in mobility, industry and building heating.
