Net Zero Energy plans 600 MW green hydrogen storage project in Ireland

Net Zero Energy has unveiled plans to develop the 600 MW Rathrush Green Energy Park, a Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) facility to produce green hydrogen in County Carlow, Ireland (Net Zero Energy press release, 08/06/2026). The project plans to use surplus renewable energy to produce hydrogen, which will be stored underground in lined rock caverns before being converted back into electricity to supply the national grid.

Developed with a total estimated investment of EUR2bn (USD2.4bn), the company hopes to submit a formal planning application by the end of 2026 following a community consultation program. Upon completion, the facility is projected to satisfy up to 10% of Ireland's peak electricity demand while displacing approximately 180 ktCO₂/year.

The Rathrush Green Energy Park aligns with Ireland’s target of at least a 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared with 2018 levels (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
