Nepal and India have reached an agreement to expand electricity import and export volumes through the 400 kV Dhalkebar–Muzaffarpur and Dhalkebar–Sitamarhi transmission lines (Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Resources and Irrigation statement, 15/07/2026).
After reviewing the existing 1 GW import-export capacity of the 400 kV Dhalkebar–Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line, the two countries agreed to raise the combined transfer capacity across the Dhalkebar–Muzaffarpur and Dhalkebar–Sitamarhi 400 kV transmission lines from 1 GW to 1.4 GW for electricity imports to Nepal, and from 1.1 GW to 1.65 GW for exports from Nepal.
The two sides also agreed to accelerate the development of several new cross-border transmission lines, including 220 kV and 440 kV projects, which are planned as joint initiatives between Nepal and India and are scheduled for completion between 2027 and 2035.
In 2024, Nepal and India signed an agreement establishing a target of exporting up to 10 GW of electricity from Nepal to India over the following decade. The agreement also included plans to develop multiple cross-border transmission lines to facilitate these power exports.
