Neoenergia plans to develop a 3 GW offshore wind farm in southern Brazil

Neoenergia, a renewable energy subsidiary of the Spanish utility Iberdrola, has applied for an environmental investigation licence for a 3 GW offshore wind project in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul region. The Águas Claras wind park will be located off the coast of the Rio Grande city harbour, at the southern tip of Brazil.

In addition to applying for a licence with the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), Neoenergia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Rio Grande do Sul government, which also includes the creation of a pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in the region. The project will aim to unite offshore wind energy and green hydrogen, which is expected to be exported from the port of Rio Grande.

At end- 2021, Brazil possessed 20.8 GW of onshore wind capacity (11% of the country’s total capacity) but did not yet possess any offshore wind capacity. According to Brazil's Energy Research Office (EPE), the country has 700 GW of untapped offshore wind potential.
