Brazilian energy group Neoenergia has requested regulatory approvals for three new offshore wind projects in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará totalling 9 GW. In Ceara, the Jangada wind complex would be located off the cost of Amontada, near the Xareu and Atum fields being sold by Petrobras. In Rio de Janeiro, the Maravilha wind complex would be located between São João da Barra and Campos dos Goytacazes, in Northern Fluminense, while the Aguas Claras wind complex in Rio Grande do Sul would be located off the coast of Capão da Canoa. The projects would be developed through Força Eólica do Brasil (FEB), controlled by Neoenergia. Each project will comprise four 750 MW offshore wind parks, with 50 wind turbines, four platforms with substations, transmission lines and one substation on land.
Neoenergia, a 51%-owned subsidiary of the Spanish energy group Iberdrola, is a large power company in Brazil, active in power generation (equity interest of more than 4.5 GW in 2018, based on hydropower and wind power) and power distribution. The company operates through Coelba Companhia de Electricidade do Estado da Bahia, Cosern, Celpe, and Elektro, distributing electricity to more than 34 million customers and selling electricity to 13.8 million clients. In December 2019, Neoenergia borrowed €250m from the European Investment Bank to finance the construction of 15 onshore wind parks in Brazil. With a total installed capacity of 520 MW, these new power plants will be located in three states in the northeast: Paraíba, Bahía and Piauí.
