The French renewable developer Neoen has inaugurated a 272 MW solar project in Portugal, which the company touts as the country’s largest. The project features two contiguous solar parks, namely the Rio Maior Solar Farm (204 MW) and Torre Bela Solar Farm (68 MW), both fully owned by Neoen.
The project is located in the municipality of Azambuja, 70 km north of Lisbon and is connected to the Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) substation, in Rio Maior, via a 400 kV transmission line. The solar project first started injecting electricity into the grid at the end of 2024. It is expected to produce 500 GWh/year of electricity, enough to power about 110,000 Portuguese households. The electricity will be purchased by the Portuguese State, under two 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).
In January 2025, Portugal's national energy grid operator REN announced that the country's renewable power generation reached 36.7 TWh, enough to meet 71% of the national electricity demand in 2024. The clean energies that contributed the most to the overall demand were hydropower (28%) and wind (27%), followed by solar (10%) and biomass (6%).
