Neoen expands South Australia’s Goyder Battery to 454 MW / 1.8 GWh

French energy storage and renewable developer Neoen plans to double the capacity of its Goyder Battery project in South Australia after securing key contracts from the South Australian government (Neoen press release, 29/07/2026).

The company has been awarded two 15-year capacity service contracts under the first tender round of South Australia’s Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism (FERM).

The two 75 MW / 8-hour contracts will be supplied by Stages 1 and 2 of the Goyder Battery, which will have a total capacity of 454 MW / 1,814 MWh. The project is located in the Mid North of South Australia, on the land of the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee Region, and forms part of the Goyder Renewables Zone, Neoen’s renewable energy hub that also includes the Goyder South and Goyder North wind parks.

In December 2025, Neoen issued notices to proceed for Stage 1 (227 MW / 907 MWh) to battery supplier Tesla and balance-of-plant contractor UGL. The company has now signed contracts with both partners for Stage 2, which will have the same capacity.

The Goyder Battery will be connected to ElectraNet’s Bundey substation and will rank among the first projects in Australia to deploy Tesla’s Megablock technology. Construction work on site is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with commercial operations expected to start in 2028.

Following the addition of this project, Neoen Australia’s total energy storage portfolio in operation or under construction will reach 2.7 GW / 9.1 GWh.
