Naturgy (Spain) posted a 15% increase in European wind generation in 2019

The Spanish energy group Naturgy (former Gas Natural Fenosa) has released its 2019 results. The group's global installed power generation capacity rose by 8.3% (+1.3 GW) to 16.9 GW in 2019, driven by new wind capacities in Europe (+550 MW). Despite this surge in wind capacity, Naturgy's total power generation dipped by 4.2% in 2019 globally: in Europe, coal-fired power generation collapsed (-81%), while hydropower generation fell by 16%, offsetting a 15% rise in wind power generation. Overseas, power generation rose in Australia (wind power generation increased fivefold), in Mexico (CCGT generation) and in Brazil (solar generation). Overall, the group's emission factor contracted by 12% to 301 tCO2eq/GWh and its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by nearly 156% to 15.4 MtCO2eq.

In 2019, Naturgy supplied nearly 215 TWh of gas, i.e. 9.4% less than in 2018 due to lower sales to industrial customers and to Spanish households (increased competition and mild weather), despite higher sales to CCGT power plants. Naturgy's electricity sales also fell by 29% to 25 TWh, owing to lower sales in the liberalised market (-34%). Global LNG sales also fell by nearly 12% to 124 TWh, while gas deliveries to Spain through the EMPL gas pipeline decreased by 41% to 68.7 TWh. Gas distributed volumes slightly increased (+3.7% to 205 TWh), while electricity sales contracted by 5.2% to 31 TWh.
