Natural gas production from OECD reached record levels in 2018

According to a recent brief from the International Energy Agency (IEA) the production of natural gas in OECD countries increased by 7.4% in 2018. Most of the additional gas production came from the United States (+89 bcm), Australia (+18 bcm, thanks to the Ichthys gas field in the Browse basin that should reach a peak in the next two years) and Canada to a lesser extent (+6.8 bcm). The largest share of production in 2018 came from the United States (59%), followed by Canada (13%), Australia (8.9%) and Norway (8.6%). Gas production in the OECD Europe fell by 3.6%, with the Netherlands showing the most significant fall (-9.6%) following the committment to reduce the exploitation of the Groningen field.

Total OECD gas deliveries increased by 3.5% in 2018, especially in the United States (+10.5%), where 14.5 GW of net gas-fired power generation capacity were added in 2018, and where weather conditions raised gas consumption. Gas consumption also rose in OECD Asia, especially in South Korea (+11.9%), due to a thigher gas use for electricity and heat generation. Gas consumption in OECD Europe declined (-3.6%) after three years of consecutive growth.
