National Grid will extend operations of the France–UK IFA interconnector until 2050

National Grid will invest up to GBP400m (EUR475m) to extend the operation of the 2 GW Interconnexion France-Angleterre (IFA) electricity link until at least 2050 (National Grid, 29/10/2026). The programme will upgrade technical equipment, buildings and other facilities at the interconnector site. Jointly owned by National Grid and French transmission system operator RTE, IFA has operated since 1986 and enables bidirectional electricity flows between France and Great Britain.

In 2025, French electricity exports amounted to 109 TWh and went to Italy (25%), Germany/Belgium (25%%), Great Britain (22%), and Switzerland (19%). In 2025, the United Kingdom was again a net importer, with 30 TWh of net imports (-11%). Imports fell by 11% in 2025 (after doubling in 2023) to 30 TWh and came mainly from France (48%), Norway (22%), Belgium (15%), and the Netherlands (15%).
