National Grid plans a new 1.2 GW transmission line linking the US and Canada

National Grid New Hampshire has proposed the development of a new 340 km power transmission line that would link the US states of New Hampshire and Vermont to the Canadian province of Québec. The transmission project, which would partly run underground, would be able to carry power to the New England region from Canada, as well as send to Quebec renewable energy produced by future wind parks off the New England coast. It would enter the US near Canaan, Vermont. The 1.2 GW Twin State Clean Energy Link is expected to cost US$2bn and could, if approved, begin construction by 2026 at the earliest.

In April 2023, the Superior Court of Maine (US) ruled in favor of the construction of a 336 km, 1.2 GW transmission line linking Québec (Canada) and the US state of Maine and developed by Hydro-Québec; the US$1bn New England Clean Energy Connect transmission project was originally planned for the end of 2022. Hydro-Québec is also developing the 546 km-long, 1.25 GW Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line, which will link Québec to the city of New York.
