Mulilo secures financing for 77 MW/308 MWh BESS project (South Africa)

South African renewable energy developer and independent power producer Mulilo has announced the financial close of the Hartebeesfontein Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, a 77 MW/308 MWh facility situated in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, North West Province, South Africa (Mulilo press release, 11/06/2026).

According to the press release, “This is Mulilo’s second renewable energy project to be executed within the municipality, which is strategically located near Eskom’s Hermes Main Transmission Substation (MTS)”.

The Hartebeesfontein BESS was selected under Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), in which Mulilo secured five of the eight projects awarded.

With a storage capacity of 308 MWh, the facility is intended to enhance grid stability and provide system support services. It will deliver ancillary services to the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Mulilo focuses on the development of wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects and currently has a development pipeline of more than 30 GW across South Africa.
