MTerra Solar project (600 MW) starts operations in the Philippines

The first phase of the MTerra Solar project in the Philippines has entered commercial operation, with 600 MWac of solar capacity now operational under a power supply agreement (PSA) with utility Meralco (Meralco PowerGen Corporation press release, 03/08/2026).

“The declaration of commercial operations beginning on 26 August 2026 follows from the issuance of the Final Certificate of Approval to Connect (FCATC) by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), confirming that the facility has met the necessary requirements to safely and reliably connect and operate 950 MWac of solar capacity and 825 MW of battery energy storage system within the national grid” according to the company’s press release.

MTerra Solar is being developed by Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) and Actis in two phases, with the second phase expected to be completed in 2027. The project is planned to comprise 3.5 GWp of solar PV capacity and 4.5 GWh of BESS capacity. The project was inaugurated in July, at which point 1.373 GWac of solar PV capacity and 825 MW/3.3 GWh of BESS had been energised. The initial grid synchronisation and energisation of Phase I were completed in February 2026. An additional 250 MW of solar capacity covered by the same PSA is expected to reach commercial operation in the coming months. 

Despite growing renewable capacity, coal still represents a major share of the power mix according to our data: in 2025, coal accounted for 56%, followed by gas (17%), and hydro (11%).
