Mozambique aims to reach universal electricity access in 2030

Mozambique's state-owned power utility EDM plans to launch in 2020 a ten-year programme to reach universal electricity access in 2030. The electrification rate in Mozambique currently stands at around 30% and EDM aims to double or triple this connection rate by 2024. The company will invest US$6bn in the project, with US$300m available for the first stage. It will focus on solar panels and installation and on power networks - including mini-grids - to improve power supply in remote areas.

In November 2018, the National Electricity Program of Mozambique already set the target of 100% electrification rate by 2030 and planned to invest more than US$5bn in the electrification programme, to implemented by EDM and the government's Energy Fund (FUNAE). US$223m in funding was expected to come in the first three years of the program from the World Bank, the European Union, Sweden and Norway.
