The Moroccan government's green hydrogen committee has selected a total of five consortiums to develop six green hydrogen projects valued at MAD319bn (US$32.5bn) that would also produce ammonia and steel, as well as industrial fuel. Morocco plans to offer up to 30,000 ha of land per project once a preliminary agreement is closed.
Among the selected investors, three companies or consortia plan to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia, namely ACWA Power, the ORNX consortium (Ortus (US), Acciona (Spain), and Nordex (Germany)), and a consortium of Chinese companies UEG and China Three Gorges. In addition, a consortium of Taqa (UAE) and Cepsa (Spain) plans to produce green hydrogen, green ammonia and synthetic fuels. Finally, the Moroccan company Nareva plans to produce green hydrogen, ammonia, synthetic fuels and green steel.
In January 2021, Morocco unveiled the Morocco Roadmap for Green Hydrogen. The country is targeting a local hydrogen market of 4 TWh and an export market of 10 TWh by 2030, which would require the development of 6 GW of new renewable capacity.
