Morocco plans to add 6.8 GW of renewables from 2015 to 2025

The Energy Ministry of Morocco plans to add 6,760 MW of renewable power capacity between 2015 and 2025, including 3,120 MW of solar, 2,740 MW of wind power and 900 MW of hydropower, for a total investment of US$25bn. Over the 2021-2025 period, 1 GW of wind power could be added, along with at least 1.1 GW of solar power and 450 MW of hydropower.

According to Morocco's energy strategy launched as of 2009, renewables should account for 42% of installed capacity by 2020 (2 GW of solar, 2 GW of wind and 2 GW of hydropower for a total investment of US$13.1bn). So far, Morocco has more than 800 MW of operational wind capacity, while 550 MW are under development and 850 MW under bidding process. Including the projects to be developed as of 2021, total wind capacity would exceed 3 GW by 2025 and solar capacity would reach 3,140 MW. Wind potential is significant: the onshore potential has been estimated at 25 GW, including nearly 6 GW that could be developed by 2030; offshore potential is estimated at 250 GW.
