Morocco obtains €130m to finance its wind energy program

The Moroccan government has concluded a guarantee contract with the German bank KFW for the granting of a €130m loan. The funds, which will be delivered to the National Electricity and Water Board (NEB), will be used to finance the second phase of its integrated wind energy program.

This program will enable the construction of six wind farms with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. It will be divided into two phases, the first of which will allow the installation of a 150 MW wind farm in Taza while the remaining 850 MW will be installed during the second stage.

This second phase will enable the construction of the Tanger II (100 MW), Boujdour (100 MW), Toskrad (300 MW), Midelt (150 MW) and Jbel Lahdid (200 MW) wind parks. The power stations which are concerned by the current financing contract are those of Tanger II, Midelt and Jbel Lahdid.

The KFW also granted the NEB a second loan of €20m to finance Morocco's national liquid sanitation program.

More generally, the country aims to meet 42% of its energy needs with renewable energy by 2020 and wind energy will play a significant role in it.
