Moldova passes new approval process law for power plants above 20 MW

The Moldovan Government has approved a new law for the construction, reconstruction or expansion of power plants above 20 MW. According to the country’s Ministry of Energy, which drafted the regulation, the new regulation will make the process of obtaining the necessary documents required for construction and commissioning more efficient and transparent, and will facilitate the authorisation of renewable energy capacities, in particular those on the free market and without a support scheme.

Under the new law, project evaluation will be carried out by Moldova’s Authorization Commission, which will consider the technical feasibility of the project, the technology's compliance with state energy policies, the credibility of the power plant's connection to the electricity grid and the eligibility of the land required.

As of end-2023, Moldova’s installed electricity capacity available in the territory under control of the national government stood at 618 MW. Renewables represented 1/3 of this capacity (including 128 MW of wind, 46 MW of solar and 16 MW of hydropower), while gas dominated with 352 MW of capacity (nearly 90% of the total power generation in 2022).
