The Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Slovakia has confirmed the delayed commissioning of the third and fourth reactors (440 MW each) at the Mochovce nuclear power plant. Unit 3, initially expected in late 2016 or early 2017, is scheduled for November 2017, while unit 4 should be commissioned a year later, in November 2018.
The expansion project is carried out by Slovakia main power utility Slovenske Elektrarne (34% state-owned, 33% Enel, 33% Czech energy group EPH). Under a December 2015 agreement, Enel will sell its remaining 33% stake in Slovenske Elektrarne to EPH after the completion of the nuclear project; EPH would eventually sell 17% of its stake in Slovenske Elektrarne to the government.
Increased safety standards after Fukushima have delayed the project and raised costs: the project was initially estimated at €2.8bn and costs were revised upward at €4.6bn (likely higher).
