Mitsui and ACWA win BOO contracts for 3.1 GW CCGT projects in Oman

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has selected a consortium of Mitsui (50.1%), ACWA Power International (44.9%) and Dhofar International Development and Investment Holding Co (DIDIC, 5%), to develop two gas-fired CCGT power projects with a total capacity of 3,150 MW, namely the 1,450 MW Ibri project and the 1,700 MW Sohar project in northern Oman.

The consortium will be in charge of the construction, maintenance and operation of power plants under a build-own-operate (BOO) scheme. Mitsui will operate both plants and sell electricity under a 15-year power purchase agreement with OPWP. The power plants will supply approximately 30% of the electricity that will be consumed in the Muscat area once the commercial operation is achieved. The projects will require a total investment of US$2.3bn and should be commissioned in the first half of 2019 (January 2019 for Sohar-3 and April 2019 for Ibri).
