Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems (MNES) has announced that it will shift its commercial priorities in the United States starting in 2014. The new plan will emphasize MNES’ services and components business, and the company will reorganize to affect these changes. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, (MHI), MNES' parent company, will shift resources and work to secure the restart of the Japanese nuclear power plants. MNES remains committed to obtaining a NRC design certification for the US-APWR in the United States), and will continue the activity under an extended schedule.
This decision will affect Luminant's new build programme in Texas. The company, which plans to add two 1,700 MW APWR reactors at its Comanche Peak nuclear power plant (units 3 and 4), has decided to suspend its application for a combined construction and operating licence (COL) for these two units. The application is dependent on design certification of the APWR. The NRC had earlier said that it expected to make a final decision on the COL in November 2015.
