Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of the Japanese group Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has completed the installation of the third of four gas turbines units at the 2,650 MW Rayong CCGT power plant located in south-eastern Thailand. Mitsubishi Power started operating the first unit of the project in March 2023. The third unit commissioned at the Rayong CCGT plant is the seventh turbine out of a total of eight to be delivered under a 5,300 MW contract secured by Mitsubishi Power in 2018 for a large-scale Power Plant Project. The eighth and final unit is scheduled to be completed by fall 2024.
The eight CCGT units will be used at two gas-fired plants in Rayong and Chonburi, south of Bangkok, that are owned and operated by Gulf PD Company, a joint venture project by Thailand’s Gulf Energy Development and Japan’s Mitsui. Each 2,650 MW plant will comprise four power trains comprising a gas turbine, steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator, and generator. The four units of the Chonburi power plant have already been installed and started generated power in October 2022 and the two power plants are expected to begin commercial operations by October 2024. Power generated at these plants will be sold to Thailand’s state power company Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).
As of end-2022, gas-fired power plants accounted for nearly 61% of Thailand’s installed capacity with over 26 GW and 62% of its power generation with nearly 112 TWh.
