German coal and lignite producer MIBRAG, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Czech group Energeticky a Průmyslovy Holding (EPH), is interested in acquiring Vattenfall's lignite operations in Germany, mainly located in the states of Brandenburg and Saxony (Lusatia region). Vattenfall announced its intention to divest its stakes in coal and lignite mines (including coal- or lignite-fired power plants) in early November 2014.
EPH is the second largest power generation company in the Czech Republic. The group is increasingly active on the power market and in coal and lignite mining, through successive acquisitions. It acquired a 50% stake in MIBRAG in 2009 (remaining 50% purchased from CEZ in 2011). In September 2013, it acquired the Helmstedt coalfield from E.ON, including the 390 MW Buschhaus coal-fired power plant and the open-cast mine at Schöningen. Earlier in November 2014, EPH took over the 1,960 MW Eggborough coal-fired power plant in Goole, in the United Kingdom.
