MHPS will support the 1.3 GW Magnum power plant conversion (Netherlands)

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has won a contract to support the conversion of Nuon's 1,320 MW Magnum gas-fired power plant into a hydrogen-powered plant in Groningen province (Netherlands). The Magnum Carbon-Free Gas Power project is led by Nuon/Vattenfall, Statoil and Gasunie. It would transform the facility into a CO2-free hydrogen-powered plant that could potentially reduce Nuon's CO2 emissions by 4 MtCO2/year. MHPS will assess the technical feasibility of using hydrogen for generating electricity.

Statoil, Vattenfall and Gasunie signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the plant's transformation in July 2017.

The Magnum power plant is located in Eemshaven (Groningen province, Netherlands) and is operated by the Dutch company Nuon, a subsidiary of Vattenfall. It consists of three combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) with a capacity of 440 MW each. According to the companies, one CCGT is estimated to emit nearly 1.3 MtCO2/year.
