A consortium between the Japanese power utility Tohoku Electric and the Portuguese company Renova, which is developing the 700 MW Akita Yurihonjo offshore wind park off the coast of Japan, has chosen MHI Vestas to provides the turbines for the project. The project has been under development since 2015. Construction is due to start in 2021, and the project is expected to come onstream in the 2024 financial year.

In March 2020, the special purpose company Akita Offshore Wind Corporation (AOW) made a final investment decision (FID) on two offshore wind projects totalling 140 MW of capacity at Akita Port and Noshiro Port in Akita Prefecture (Japan). The JPY 100bn (US$930m) project is expected to be the first large-scale commercial offshore wind complex in Japan. It will consist of two parks, a 55 MW project at Akita Port and an 84 MW project at Noshiro. Commercial operations are expected to start in 2022.
