Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) and its partners have commissioned Phase I of the MTerra Solar project in the Philippines, featuring 1.4 GW of solar PV capacity and 825 MW/3,300 MWh of battery storage capacity (MGEN press release, 14/07/2026).
The company stated that its current maximum export capacity to the Luzon grid remains limited to 750 MW, pending the completion of several ongoing works carried out in cooperation with the grid operator. Once fully completed, the project will reach 3.5 GW of solar capacity combined with 4.5 GWh of energy storage, positioning it among the world’s largest hybrid solar-storage facilities.
The Philippines aims to increase the share of renewables in its power mix to 35% and achieve a 75% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030.
At the end of 2025, the country’s total installed power capacity reached 32 GW, with the electricity mix still heavily dependent on coal (41%), followed by gas (15%), hydro (12%), solar and oil (11% each). In addition, the country plans to develop nuclear power to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels (Enerdata Global Energy & CO2 data).
