The recent decision by the Mexican power market operator CENACE to put on hold grid connections for new solar and wind power projects until further notice, citing intermittent power supply that could threaten the power grid stability in a context of sanitary emergency, is having impacts on renewable project developers.
According to the renewable power associations Asolmex and Amdee, the CENACE measure is affecting 28 solar and wind power plants already completed with a cumulated capacity of 3.2 GW (two projects in Sonora totalling 474 MW, 2 projects in Aguascalientes totalling 400 MW and three projects totalling 348 MW in Coahuila). In addition, it is hindering 16 solar and wind projects under construction that would add 2.06 GW (390 MW in Yucatan, 334 MW in Jalisco and 315 MW in Tamaulipas), for a total investment of US$6.4bn. The grid connection suspension is also affecting Neoen's 375 MW El Llano solar PV rpoject, which had already started to produce electricity and expected to complete pre-operational tests before July 2020.
