Mexico will start gradual fuel price liberalisation in late March 2017

The Mexican Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) has announced that fuel prices would be gradually liberalised as of late March 2017.

Prices for gasoline and diesel will be gradually liberalised by regions, starting with the north-western states of Baja California and Sonora on 30 March 2017, since these states have greater connectivity with gasoline supply sources (largest infrastructures and storage capacities). Price liberalisation will then extend to Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas and the city of Gomez Palacio in Durango on 15 June 2017, to Baja California Sur, Durango and Sinaloa on 30 October 2017. It will be extended to Mexico City, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Colima, Chiapas, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Veracruz and Zacateca on 30 November 2017 and should be completed in Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan on 30 December 2017.

The Government still regulates energy prices and any changes in the prices are examined by the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (Ministry of Finance)
