The Mexican Government has presented the Plan for the Strengthening and Expansion of the National Electric System 2025-2030 of the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The plan expects includes 51 electricity projects totalling an estimated investment of US$22.3bn with the aim of generating 22,674 MW. To do so, the CFE plans to develop 7 wind projects, 9 solar PV power plants (673 MW), 5 natural gas-fired CCGT power plants and one internal combustion project (240 MW) over a six-year period. Tenders will be launched for the development of the projects by the end of April 2025. The investment is expected to bring electricity to more than 500,000 homes and to provide energy to 99% of the population through a MXN14bn investment (US$685m).
The plan aims to guarantee the supply of sufficient, sustainable, reliable and affordable electricity for the development of the country and the well-being of the Mexican population. In addition, about 26 projects initiated by the previous government are expected to come into operation in the coming years, including over 4 GW in 2025 and 2.7 GW in 2026.
At the end of 2023, Mexico had a total installed capacity of 91 GW, consisting of 29 GW of gas, 22 GW of oil, 13 GW of hydro, 11 GW of solar, 6.9 GW of wind, 5.5 GW of coal, 1.6 GW of nuclear, 1 GW of geothermal, and 0.9 GW of biomass.
