Mexico's capital city has launched its "Solar City" programme, which aims to install 350 MW of solar PV capacity by 2024. The programme plans 150 MW of PV projects of 500 kWp and more, including a 25 MW car park rooftop. It plans to develop 200 MW of solar projects up to 500 kWp, including 100 MW for around 10,000 small and medium entreprises (SMEs) and another 100 MW for SMEs and households. The programme also foresees the installation of around 40 kWp systems for government buildings, a PV-powered electrification of buildings and maize mills, and solar heaters for more than 150,000 houses and businesses and for 300 public buildings.
The World Bank, along with the IADB and NAFIN should finance most of the MXN 7.9bn (US$415m) programme, while Mexico City will finance a small share. The Solar City programme is expected to reduce the city's CO2 emissions by around 2 Mt/year.
