Mexico bets on natural gas and renewables to increase energy security

The President of Mexico plans to use its natural gas reserves and promote renewables to increase its energy security according to new energy strategy (Mexican government press release, 08/04/2026). According to the Strategy to Strengthen Energy Sovereignty targets the modernisation of the power generation infrastructure for more efficient equipment, a 38% share of renewables on the country’s power mix by 2030, and the exploitation of the country’s natural gas reserves from conventional fields to reduce its dependency on imports. For the exploitation of unconventional natural gas deposits, the government plans to form a committee of scientists and specialists to study the country’s options. The committee is expected to issue its recommendations within two months.

The Mexican Secretary of Energy reported that the country consumes about 255 mcm of natural gas per day (93 bcm/year), of which 75% of the natural gas domestically consumed is imported (70 bcm/year), mainly from the US states of Texas and California. The remaining 25% is produced by the state-owned Pemex, representing about 24 bcm/year of natural gas. Although contracts for the import of gas from the US are guaranteed, the President pointed to energy sovereignty as a “responsible decision” in a context of an uncertain international scenario.
