Mexico has approved 55 private wind and solar projects with a combined installed capacity of 10.9 GW (Mexico's Photovoltaic Industry Association press release, 02/09/2026). The USD10.6bn approved projects represent the equivalent of 11% of Mexico’s current electricity generation capacity and are planned to either sell power directly into the wholesale market or operate through agreements with state utility CFE under the country’s “Mixed Development Scheme”.
The approved capacity was allocated through two regulatory mechanisms: a priority permitting process launched in October 2025 that approved 17 projects (2.9 GW), and a second process launched in February 2026 that awarded 38 projects (8 GW) under joint development schemes with CFE. A third approval process for additional private renewable projects has been underway since May 2026.
According to official projections, the new projects are expected to help increase Mexico’s renewable electricity generation by 107% between 2024 and 2030, from 82 TWh to 170 TWh, raising the share of renewables in the country’s power mix from 23% to 38%.
Mexico’s Electricity Sector Development Plan targets 22 GW of new renewable capacity by 2030, including 14 GW of solar PV, alongside 5.5 GW of energy storage capacity.
