The Finnish state-owned company Metsähallitus and the Swedish energy giant Vattenfall have agreed to expand the Korsnäs offshore wind park from a planned capacity of 1.3 GW to 2 GW. An updated planning initiative will be filed with the municipality of Korsnäs, while the environmental impact assessment and land use planning are also being progressed together. The updated plan will include an additional area of 5,400 hectares (ha), expanding the project to 27,400 ha to generate 5 TWh/year of clean electricity. The wind plant is estimated to have a total investment ranging between €2bn to €3bn and is scheduled to begin operations in the early 2030s. Metsähallitus also announced plans for the tendering of over 6 GW of offshore wind projects in Finnish waters and for the launch of two tenders before the end of 2023.
At the end of 2021, Finland had only 73 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (and about 3.2 GW of onshore wind). The country currently has over 3 GW of wind projects under construction and over 29 GW under development. Finland has set the goal to reach net zero emissions by 2035 and reach 50% of renewables in the country’s final energy consumption by 2030.
