Metlen commissions a 330 MW/790 MWh standalone BESS project in Greece

Greece’s Metlen Energy & Metals and Karatzis Group of Companies have officially commissioned a 330 MW/790 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Larissa, in Thessaly, Greece (Metlen press release, 15/10/2026). The project was delivered through a joint investment vehicle owned 49% by Metlen and 51% by Karatzis Group of Companies. According to Metlen’s press release, the facility is the largest standalone BESS in Greece. The investment is backed by loans from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility – NextGenerationEU.

The inauguration follows the completion, a few days earlier, of Greek company Helleniq Energy’s first BESS at its Thessaloniki Industrial Facilities. The installation has a power capacity of 100 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh.

In 2025, the Greek government launched a new battery storage programme targeting 4.6 GW of utility-scale standalone projects, comprising 3.7 GW connected to the transmission network and 900 MW connected to the distribution network (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
