Mauritania awards two gas blocks to Taqa Arabia and GoGas

The Mauritanian Ministry of Oil, Mines, and Energy has signed a gas exploration and production contract with a consortium comprising Taqa Arabia and GoGas for the Banda and Tevet fields located in the Mauritanian coastal basin and which have total reserves estimated at 2.2 tcf (62 bcm) of natural gas. The gas extracted from the deposits is expected to supply a 180 MW power plant, located north of Nouakchott. The two blocks were previously owned by Tullow, which surrendered them in 2021.

Gas resources were estimated at 1,100 bcm in 2021, including the Hmeimin field on the maritime border with Senegal (450 bcm), which comprise the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project. However, Mauritania does not currently produce gas. Since 2010, the electricity capacity has been multiplied by 3.2, reaching 627 MW at the end of 2022, with 80% of oil, 14% of solar, and 5% of wind. The installed capacity per capita is 130 W/hab. (2021), which is lower than in Morocco (290 W/hab) but higher than in Senegal (90 W/hab.) and Mali (50 W/hab.).
