Mauritania aims to reduce its emissions by two thirds in 2035

Mauritania has published its new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 covering the 2031-35 period (UNFCCC, 28/10/2025). The country commits to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 75.8% in 2035 compared to BAU, including 8.1% unconditionally and 67.7% with international support. Emissions are expected to increase by 92% between 2022 and 2035 (+5.1%/year) under the BAU scenario, by 75% under the unconditional trajectory (+4.4%/year) and but to fell by 42% under the conditional trajectory (-4.1%/year). Most of emissions reduction are expected to come from the energy sector, including switching from oil to natural gas at the Nouakchott power plant, developing 480 MW of gas plant by 2030 and implementing different measures of energy efficiency.

In 2021, the country pledged to unconditionally reduce its emissions by 11% in 2030 relative to BAU and by 92% with international support. In the new plan, by 2030, Mauritania intends to unconditionally reduce its emissions by 11 compared to BAU, and by 66% with international support.
