Matrix Renewables closes financing for 500 MW/1 GWh BESS in Scotland (UK)

Matrix Renewables has successfully closed a GBP245m (EUR283m) non-recourse project financing to support the construction of a 500 MW/1 GWh BESS project located in Eccles-Leitholm, in southern Scotland (United Kingdom). Construction commenced in November 2025, with commercial operations expected in the third quarter of 2027 under a partnership with EDF.

Matrix had previously announced its entry into the UK market through a partnership with Green BESS Developments to develop two standalone BESS projects in Scotland, the Eccles and Kilmarnock projects, with a combined capacity of 1 GW/2 GWh. Located along transmission corridors between Scotland and England, the Eccles battery storage facility will enhance grid flexibility, energy security, and contribute to the integration of renewable energy within the UK power system.
